Pa. WWII vet gets long-delayed Purple Heart
Pa. WWII vet gets Purple Heart 70 years after being wounded in the Battle of Okinawa
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) ' A World War II veteran from Pittsburgh has at long last received a Purple Heart ' 70 years after he was wounded in the Battle of Okinawa.

Aaron Narvol was awarded the medal Tuesday on his 93rd birthday for the bullet he took to his leg while trying to save a fellow soldier.

Narvol had tried to obtain the medal several times previously. Workers at the hospice center where he receives care contacted U.S. Sen. Bob Casey after Narvol said he'd like to try once more.

Casey's staff researched Narvol's military records. They say a post-war name change from Narvolansky to Narvol may have complicated Narvol's previous applications.

Narvol tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/yz2osv ) he never thought he'd get the long-awaited medal. Now he refuses to take it off.
