Pa. mom gets 8 years in prison for $1M fraud involving carjacking hoax
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ' A Philadelphia-area woman has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for stealing more than $1 million from her employer, calling in a hoax carjacking and fleeing to Disney World with her young daughter.

Forty-year-old paralegal Bonnie Sweeten, of Feasterville, triggered a nationwide search in 2009 when she told a 911 operator she and her 9-year-old daughter had been kidnapped.

Authorities say she fled before an arrest for swindling her boss and an elderly relative. She spent a year in prison for the fake 911 call.

Sweeten told the judge before her sentencing Thursday she did what it took to pay for in vitro treatments after a second marriage, an upscale house and other luxuries.

Sweeten has already spent more than a year in prison.
