Pa. couple charged with killing adopted Russian son say they sought help for his self-abuse
YORK, Pa. (AP) ' A Pennsylvania couple charged with killing their adopted Russian son say the 7-year-old had a history of injuring himself.
Closings arguments are under way Friday in the murder trial of Michael and Nannette Craver of York County.
The Cravers adopted Nathaniel and his twin sister at 18 months.
Defense lawyer Rick Robinson says they suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome. He says the Dillsburg couple spent years seeking help for Nathaniel's troubling behavior.
They say the fatal 2009 head injury occurred when he ran into a pellet stove.
A York County jury must weigh first-degree murder, third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges, along with child endangerment.
Chuck Johnson of the National Council for Adoption says Russian authorities are watching the verdict after a string of U.S. deaths involving Russian children.
