Partial results give Kabila 14-point lead
Partial results keep Kabila ahead with 14-point lead
By The Associated Press

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) ' Partial results announced by Congo's election commission put incumbent President Joseph Kabila first with 8.3 million out of the 17.3 million votes counted so far, or 48 percent.

Opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi is trailing with 5.9 million votes, or 34 percent. The results issued just before midnight Tuesday represent 89.2 percent of polling stations. They were published on the website of a United Nations-backed radio station.

The latest partial results make it all but certain that Kabila will be declared the winner of the disputed poll when the final provisional results are published this week. Those results were to be published Tuesday by midnight but the election commission announced they had given themselves a 48-hour extension in order to receive missing tally sheets.
