Parts of northern Ill. landmark spared from fire
Firefighters' efforts confine fire to part of northern Illinois landmark, businesses spared

PERU, Ill. (AP) ' The fire that raged through a massive former clock factory destroyed part of the northern Illinois landmark, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading throughout the complex.

Peru Assistant Fire Chief Jim Duncan says the middle building at the Westclox complex was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. But Duncan tells the (LaSalle) News-Tribune that the businesses in other parts of the complex were spared from the flames, although they may have smoke damage.

Two teens are facing aggravated arson charges in the fire, which left one firefighter injured.

LaSalle firefighter Steve Smith is recovering after leg surgery. The 26-year-old Marine veteran told The (Ottawa) Times that he served in Iraq without a scratch and isn't happy to start his New Year in the hospital.
