Perilous new Vegas water pipeline claims a life
Drilling on new pipeline tapping Lake Mead for Las Vegas claims a life, shows project perils
By The Associated Press

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) ' The perils of drilling a key water intake pipeline beneath vast Lake Mead are being cast in stark terms.

Veteran tunnel worker Thomas Turner of Henderson is being remembered Friday in a private family memorial.

He was killed Monday working 600 feet below ground drilling a nearly 3-mile-long tunnel to a deep part of the Colorado River reservoir behind Hoover Dam.

The $817 million project should finish in mid-2014. It'll add a third water intake for thirsty Las Vegas, 30 miles away.

Engineers are comparing work on the Lake Mead "Third Straw" with the Lincoln Tunnel in the 1930s beneath the Hudson River and the Eisenhower Tunnel in the 1970s on Interstate 70 west of Denver.

But they say drilling beneath the nation's largest man-made reservoir is much more complex.
