Perry admits he 'stepped in it,' wipes off boot
Perry acknowledges he 'stepped in it' during debate, wipes off boot and keeps on campaigning
By The Associated Press

ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) ' Rick Perry says he "stepped in it." Now he's trying to clean off his boot.

The Texas governor was looking to stem any fallout Thursday from a major misstep in a GOP presidential debate the night before.

Perry said he would eliminate three federal agencies but struggled to name them. He ticked off the Commerce and Education departments. Only later in the evening could he muster the third target: Energy.

The immediate fallout was brutal. And Perry acknowledged the problem, telling reporters he "really stepped in it."

Publicly, Perry aides sought to downplay their boss' shaky answer. Yet he had no public schedule Thursday and his next public campaign stops were scheduled in South Carolina on Friday ' a day before yet another debate.
