Author-journalist Peter Godwin named president of PEN American Center

NEW YORK (AP) ' Peter Godwin, a journalist and memoir writer, has been selected as the new president of the PEN American Center.

The literary and human rights organization announced Tuesday that Godwin, 54, was selected by the PEN members to succeed author-scholar Kwame Anthony Appiah, who has just completed the third of three one-year terms. Appiah said in a statement he was "delighted" by the choice of Godwin.

A native of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Godwin has long been a political and human rights activist. His books include "The Fear: Robert Mugabe and the Martyrdom of Zimbabwe" and "When a Crocodile Eats the Sun."
