Pettitte testimony appears to help Clemens by indicating possible misunderstanding
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Andy Pettitte (PEHT'-iht) was supposed to bolster the government's perjury case against Roger Clemens, his former baseball teammate and friend. Instead, Pettitte appears to have substantially aided Clemens by readily conceding he might have misunderstood their conversation about human growth hormone.
The doubt Pettitte acknowledged on cross-examination Wednesday sounded like a significant step back from his earlier testimony. Just the day before, Pettitte said Clemens had mentioned that he had taken HGH.
Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is accused of lying to Congress in 2008 when he said he never used steroids or HGH.
When Pettitte was asked if it was fair to say there is a "50-50" chance he misunderstood the conversation, Pettitte replied, "I'd say that's fair."
