Pickup driver and dog survive Calif. train crash
Pickup driver and puppy survive freight train collision in California's San Joaquin Valley

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ' A man and his puppy survived when their pickup was hit by a California freight train that pushed the wreckage 500 feet down the track in the San Joaquin Valley.

The California Highway Patrol says the Ford F-150 pickup driven by 47-year-old Jose Cazares was hit by the train Tuesday morning east of Fresno.

He was crossing the tracks at a well-marked crossing with a clear view of the tracks and was treated for minor injuries.

The Fresno Bee ( ) reports it took firefighters and officers 45 minutes to dismantling the pickup to get to the bull mastiff puppy trapped inside.

The dog suffered a broken leg and injuries to its back left side and had to have a digit removed from its back left foot.
