Pitt clinic shooter was gifted, troubled student
School officials say gunman at Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic was gifted, yet troubled student
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) ' The man who police say fatally shot a medical worker and wounded six other people at a psychiatric clinic in Pittsburgh was a gifted, hardworking student at one school yet was expelled from another for harassing female students.

Police say 30-year-old John Shick began shooting almost immediately upon entering the lobby of the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic on Thursday. Police who had trained for a Virginia Tech-style shooting killed him.

David Alberg, a professor of chemistry at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., says Shick was a "good, hardworking student" who got degrees from that school and Columbia University in New York.

But the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Shick was barred from the Duquesne University campus last November, after he harassed female students. Duquesne spokeswoman Bridget Fare says approximately eight students complained about Shick.
