Police: 3 bombs explode in northeast Nigeria city beset by sect violence, with 1 near mosque
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ' Police in northeast Nigeria say three bombs have exploded in a city beset by violence from a radical Muslim sect.
Borno state police commissioner Simeon Midenda told The Associated Press one of the bombs detonated Friday near an Islamic college and a busy mosque in Maiduguri. Midenda said parents were there to pick up their children at the time of the explosion.
Officials had no immediate casualty figures.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, a radical Muslim sect known locally as Boko Haram operates in the area.
That sect has claimed responsibility for a string of assassinations and bombings in northern Nigeria in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law in Africa's most populous nation.
