RI pension battle heats up as public workers, retirees urge lawmakers to oppose overhaul
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ' Rhode Island public workers and retirees are protesting a public pension overhaul proposal that would leave many retirees waiting years for a pension increase.
About 100 people gathered in the Statehouse to decry the pending legislation, saying it goes back on years of promises to state workers.
Lisa Rattenni works with developmentally disabled Rhode Islanders and says she left the private sector because the state offered retirement security. Now she says she worries about how she'll pay for retirement.
The legislation from Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) and Treasurer Gina Raimondo calls for a new system combining 401(k)-style accounts with traditional pensions. The plan would also halt cost-of-living pension increases for most retirees for a projected 19 years.
Chafee plans to address a rally in support of the legislation later Wednesday.
