Publisher John Sargent Sr. dies in NYC at age 87
Publisher John Sargent Sr., ex-Doubleday CEO who worked with Eisenhower, dies in NYC at age 87

NEW YORK (AP) ' A former Doubleday publishing company CEO who worked with authors from Dwight Eisenhower to Stephen King has died in New York City. John Turner Sargent Sr. was 87.

Sargent was the CEO of Doubleday in the 1960s and '70s. He helped recruit Jacqueline Kennedy as an editor. He was the father of Macmillan publishing company CEO John Sargent Jr.

Doubleday parent company Random House Inc. says in a statement released on Tuesday he died "peacefully" at his Manhattan home on Sunday.

Sargent published everything from award-winning poetry by Theodore Roethke to best-selling fiction by Leon Uris.
