Reno air race victim: 'There was a lot of carnage'
Man hurt in Reno air crash says debris severed Achilles tendon: 'There was a lot of carnage'
By The Associated Press

RENO, Nev. (AP) ' A 59-year-old man says it was surreal watching a vintage plane hurtle toward the seats he was in at a Reno air race.

Ed Larson lives part-time in Genoa, Nev., and part-time in San Diego. He runs a telecommunications startup business.

The 1940s-model plane appeared to lose a piece of its tail and slammed into the first few rows of VIP box seats.

Larson ran and was hit on the back of the head by debris and one of his Achilles tendons was cut. His calf was shredded and his shoulder separated.

Larson spoke from his hospital bed in Reno, where the crash killed nine including the pilot on Friday.

He says a military helicopter at the scene took him to the hospital before life flights arrived.
