Report: Southern black Democrats lose clout with rise of GOP-controlled state legislatures
ATLANTA (AP) ' Black lawmakers have lost clout in Southern statehouses as their overwhelming allegiance to the Democratic Party has left them without power in increasingly GOP-controlled legislatures.
Their diminished influence comes amid the historic term of the country's first black president, Barack Obama. A report released Friday by the Washington-based Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies claims black voters and elected officials have less influence now than at any time since the civil rights era.
The report points out that state legislatures are increasingly divided along racial lines. According to the report, a majority of Democrats in both chambers in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi are black.
