Republicans warn transportation secretary against waiving cuts to rural air service subsidies
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Republican lawmakers are cautioning Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood against continuing subsidies for air service to 10 rural communities unless he can show it would be too difficult for residents to drive to a larger airport.
This was revealed in a letter to LaHood from House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica of Florida and four GOP senators. They requested a "full, written justification" of any waivers granted to the subsidy cuts.
A dispute between the House and Senate, in part over the subsidies, forced a partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration earlier this summer. Senate Democratic leaders gave up their opposition to passage of legislation eliminating subsidies for the 10 communities plus three others after receiving White House assurances that the cuts would be waived.
