Rising water means evacuation of Md town
Mayor of small Md town of Port Deposit orders evacuation; flood gates open on nearby dam
By The Associated Press

PORT DEPOSIT, Md. (AP) ' The mayor of Port Deposit has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the small Susquehanna River town as flood gates are opening on the nearby dam.

Mayor Wayne Tome says the order Thursday applies to Main Street, where most of the approximately 1,000 residents live.

They have been ordered to evacuate by 8 p.m.

A shelter has been established at a nearby high school.

Port Deposit is about 7 miles below the Conowingo Dam. Water levels there are forecast to reach near-historic levels due to heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.

The National Weather Service says the river will crest at 35.8 feet Saturday morning. That would be second only to the 36.8 feet measured at the dam after Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
