Rival Palestinian leaders hold Cairo meeting
Rival Palestinian leaders hold rare meeting in Cairo to try to rescue power-sharing deal
By The Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) ' Palestinian officials say that reconciliation talks between President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal have begun in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

Hamas official Fawzi Barhoum said that all elements of a proposed deal are on the table at the Thursday talks, which are intended to rescue a power-sharing arrangement that has stalled over who in the rival Palestinian movements should lead an interim unity government.

These are their first direct talks since the Islamic militant Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in 2007, leaving the internationally backed Abbas with only the West Bank.

Repeated attempts to heal the split have failed, though in May the leaders agreed in principle on a unity deal.
