In first direct criticism of Santorum in weeks, Romney says rival isn't a fiscal conservative
BOISE, Idaho (AP) ' Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says Rick Santorum isn't a fiscal conservative, directly attacking his rival for the first time in weeks.
Romney has avoided criticizing the former Pennsylvania senator without prompting since Santorum won contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on Feb. 8.
Romney said Friday that voters who want a fiscal conservative, in his words, "can't vote for Rick Santorum." He says Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling and allowed government to expand during his 20 years in Congress.
Romney spoke at a campaign rally before of a high-dollar fundraiser in Boise, Idaho.
Both Romney's campaign and his allies are running attack ads against Santorum in Michigan, which holds its primary Feb. 28.
