SD state campgrounds busier than usual because of early warm weather
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) ' Campgrounds in South Dakota's state parks have been busier than usual this spring because of the warm weather.
State Parks and Recreation Director Doug Hofer says many campgrounds have opened shower and toilet facilities ahead of schedule to handle the early spring surge of campers.
Hofer says at least one shower house is open in 19 state campgrounds, including those in Custer State Park, Lewis and Clark Recreation Area near Yankton and West Whitlock Recreation Area near Gettysburg.
Hofer says spring is a great time to camp at state parks and recreation areas because plenty of campsites are available and no reservations are needed. Camping is available on a first-come, first served basis until May 18, when sites can be reserved.
