SF interim Mayor Lee declares himself victor
Interim Mayor Ed Lee poised to become San Francisco's 1st elected Asian-American mayor
By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' Interim Mayor Ed Lee has declared himself the winner in the San Francisco mayoral race as he was poised to formally become the city's first elected Asian-American mayor.

Lee led Wednesday in a wide field of strong candidates with 61 percent of the vote. He was appointed to lead the city in January after then-Mayor Gavin Newsom became lieutenant governor in January.

Lee's election would symbolize a milestone for the city's Asian, who make up a third of the population but have traditionally been underrepresented.

City Supervisor John Avalos trailed far behind with 39 percent.

Voters had been waiting to hear Wednesday whether they could get their first Asian-American or Hispanic mayor, after an instant runoff was launched when no candidate got a majority of the vote.
