SPIN METER: GOP says government money doesn't create jobs _ except millions of defense jobs
WASHINGTON (AP) ' The same Republicans who insist that federal spending doesn't create jobs and should be cut are leading the charge against smaller military budgets because millions of defense jobs would be lost.
Pentagon accounts are coming down. Republicans who said Democratic spending like President Barack Obama's $825 billion stimulus package in 2009 doesn't create jobs want to keep the money flowing for war fighting for the sake of sparing jobs. It's the newest argument against reducing military budgets.
The contradiction undercuts the GOP's anti-government spending mantra that proved successful for the party in 2010 congressional races ' a pitch that is sure to be repeated in 2012.
The Pentagon is facing cuts of some $450 billion in projected spending over 10 years. It could double if the special bipartisan panel stumbles.
