Rick Santorum emerges as aggressor in challenge to Romney, Perry's conservative credentials
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is playing the part of an equal-opportunity aggressor in a Republican presidential campaign debate, jabbing hard at his more recognized and better financed opponents Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.
Santorum has scant showing in national polls and a thin campaign bankroll. But he aggressively hounded Romney for the health care bill he signed in 2006 and Perry for supporting the 2008 federal Wall Street bailout.
Mostly, he cast Perry and Romney as late-coming conservatives in the race to win the GOP's most devout.
His pointed style Tuesday during the debate in Las Vegas comes with more than a month until the next debate.
Santorum has earned praise from early-voting social conservatives but has not had the national breakthrough Perry or Herman Cain have had.
