Santorum campaign asks Michigan GOP to restore at-large delegate and 15-15 split with Romney
LANSING, Mich. (AP) ' Rick Santorum's campaign is asking the Michigan Republican Party to rescind a decision giving Mitt Romney a 16-14 edge in delegates from this week's presidential primary.
State party rules said 28 delegates were to be awarded based on the results in each of the state's 14 congressional districts. Two more delegates were to be awarded proportionally based on the statewide vote.
Santorum's Michigan supporters said that should have given Romney and Santorum 15 delegates each. They want the state GOP Credentials Committee to reverse its decision giving Romney both at-large delegates.
Credentials Committee member Saul Anuzis (ah-NOO-ziss), a Romney supporter, disagrees. Anuzis says a new rule adopted Feb. 4 gives both at-large delegates to the overall winner. He says a party memo saying they'd be awarded proportionally was wrong.
