Sex offender returning for competency hearing
Freed sex offender returning to court for competency hearing
By The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ' Doctors say a convicted sex offender who faces nearly two dozen counts of rape and assault in Utah ' but remains free under a legal loophole ' may never be fit enough to face the charges.

Lonnie Hyrum Johnson faces 21 counts of rape, sodomy and sexual assault of his stepdaughter and her cousin in Utah. Johnson has a previous conviction for rape in Washington state.

He was released last year from a Utah hospital after doctors said they could not restore his competency to stand trial. Prosecutors have since been working to have him committed indefinitely.

A competency hearing was held in Provo on Wednesday.

Prosecutors argue that Johnson remains a danger to society and should be detained at the state hospital.
