Sick NH engineer prepares to leave South Pole
Sick NH woman who's been working on South Pole for year prepares to board plane to Antarctica
By The Associated Press

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ' A sick New Hampshire woman who's been working on the South Pole for a year is preparing to board a plane on the first leg of her trip to New Zealand.

Renee-Nicole Douceur (dee-SUHR') tells The Associated Press in an email sent Sunday afternoon Eastern time that she is about to leave for the National Science Foundation's research station in Antarctica. Her next stop will be Christchurch in New Zealand.

Douceur is a Seabrook, N.H., resident who works as a manager for research station contractor Raytheon Polar Services Co. She asked for an emergency evacuation after having what doctors believed was a stroke in August. Doctors she contacted for a second opinion say a tumor may have caused her vision and speech problems.

A storm delayed a flight attempt Saturday.
