Skaters refuse to give up hope on skating marathon across frozen Dutch waterways
HINDELOOPEN, Netherlands (AP) ' Hundreds of skaters have taken to the route of the Netherlands' legendary Eleven Cities Tour skating marathon the day after organizers ruled the ice is to thin for it to go ahead.
Thomas Mogendorff has a ticket for the race and is refusing to give up hope it might still happen.
He says he "won't tear up the ticket until all the ice has thawed."
Skaters glided peacefully Thursday through the flat, frozen landscape, their skates making a metallic click on the ice.
Wednesday's announcement to forego the 125-mile (200-kilometer) "Elfstedentocht" came after chiefs of the 22 separate stretches of canals, rivers and lakes that make up the tour ruled the ice was too dangerous.
