Pennsylvania soldier to get Medal of Honor 42 years after his death
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (AP) ' A soldier who died 42 years ago while protecting his comrades is finally getting the Medal of Honor.
President Barack Obama will honor Leslie Sabo, of Ellwood City, Pa., on May 16 at the White House.
Sabo was 22 when he died while trying to save fellow soldiers from a North Vietnamese ambush in May, 1970. Sabo distributed ammo and threw himself onto a wounded comrade to shield him from a grenade blast.
Sabo also charged an enemy position, drawing fire away from other U.S. soldiers, killing several enemy soldiers and forcing others to retreat.
Sabo's widow, Rose Mary Sabo Brown, and his brother George plan to attend the White House ceremony.
