Stocks fall again as unemployment claims rise from the week before
NEW YORK (AP) ' Stocks are falling in early trading on the latest sign that the U.S. jobs market is still stagnant.
The government said Thursday that the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits for the first time last week rose to 400,000 from 398,000 the week before.
Major retailers are reporting July sales figures. Macy's, Gap and Target are all down 1 percent, in part because of worries about the economy.
Thursday is another volatile day on Wall Street. Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 140 points, or 1.2 percent, to 11,755. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 17, or 1.4 percent, to 1,243. The Nasdaq composite index is down 42, or 1.6 percent, to 2,650.
