The Biloxi Fire Department has two new tools to assist with firefighting and fire safety: a truck that can deliver breathing air to firefighters at fire scenes and a trailer that can simulate house fires and other catastrophes. The 27 foot fire prevention and safety trailer can simulate a kitchen fire, hurricane, thunder or flooding. The trailer, valued at $100,000 and funded through a federal grant, uses video screens, smoke, heat, and vibrations to simulate emergency situations. As for the new air truck, it replaces a nearly 20-year-old unit that could only transport air tanks to fire scenes. Biloxi Fire Battalion Chief Stephen Strickler said, “We have unlimited air now. They can sit there and just bring bottle after bottle and just fill there on the scene versus our old air transport vehicle that just carried spare bottles. Once the air was out, it had to go refill and it would take up to a couple hours to actually refill the cascade system on that. With this here, it’s going to save time.” The air truck, a $213,163 investment, is being funded over five years through grants from the insurance industry.   [READ MORE]

Last year, the Southern Miss baseball team rolled into the Conference USA Tournament riding a 14 game winning streak. That run came to an abrupt halt in the first round, leaving the Golden Eagles to win four elimination games leading up to Championship Sunday. Last week, USM lost back-to-back games for the first time all season, perhaps alleviating some of that pressure as the red-hot hometown favorite. But now, all that pressure is on the weather to simply cooperate as the Southern Miss-UAB game still hasn’t started. We’re currently in our third weather delay of the second game between Louisiana Tech and Rice which got underway almost four hours late due to a pair of weather delays in the first game of the day between Florida Atlantic and FIU. Conference USA is enforcing the NCAA rule for lightning within ten miles of the field of play, requiring play to be suspended for 30 minutes from the most recent strike. In game two of the day, two seed Louisiana Tech taking on last year’s tournament champion, the seventh seed Rice Owls. La Tech and Rice still in weather delay with the Owls leading 6-1 in the top of the seventh. No matter how this plays out, the biggest winner of the day might just be Coach Burroughs who didn’t have to sit through those stoppages in play following his ejection. As for the early game, Florida Atlantic is on to the winner’s bracket with a 7-4 triumph over Florida International. There was supposed to be a fourth game played today but that has officially been postponed until 9 a.m. tomorrow. As it pertains to the Golden Eagles, they’ll now play on Friday at 11 a.m. with a win tonight or at 4 p.m. Thursday with a loss.   [READ MORE]
