Storms dump 8 inches of hail, launch tornadoes in Colo.; Wyo. gets hail larger than golf balls
DENVER (AP) ' Officials say summer storms struck some Rocky Mountain states overnight, launching five tornadoes in Colorado and pummeling Wyoming with hail larger than golf balls.
In Colorado Springs, people were rescued after cars became submerged in water and hail near the Citadel Shopping Center. Meteorologist Kyle Fredin says snowplows were used in Douglas County to clear hail up to 8 inches deep.
The National Weather Service says preliminary reports show that about five tornadoes touched down through Thursday in Colorado, including one near Denver International Airport, but no serious damage was reported. The others were reported in Weld, Elbert, Douglas and Arapahoe counties.
Forecaster Rob Cox in Cheyenne says hail about 2 inches in diameter was reported about 18 miles northeast of the Wyoming city early Thursday.
