Strike begins at Canadian Pacific railway, with freight service suspended in Canada, US

TORONTO (AP) ' Teamsters Canada says a strike against Canadian Pacific railway started just after midnight Wednesday, with freight service suspended across the country.

The strike is expected to halt shipments of grain, fertilizer, coal and other goods Canadian Pacific moves along nearly 14,900 miles (24,000 kilometers) of track in Canada and the U.S.

Both the union and Canadian Pacific spokesman Ed Greenberg have said negotiations will continue Wednesday. The union represents about 5,000 Canadian Pacific workers.



Both sides said Tuesday that commuter trains in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto would keep running in the event of a strike.
