Down in polls, Huntsman tries to turn around White House bid by casting opponents as extreme
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Jon Huntsman is trying to turn around his struggling campaign by painting his Republican rivals as extreme.
The former Utah governor's campaign for the White House has been rocky ever since he entered the race for the GOP nomination.
Now, he's arguing that he's the mainstream candidate in the field and that his opponents are on the fringes. The strategy carries risks.
Huntsman initially pledged a civil campaign. But voters who typically are turned off by negative campaigning now could view him as just another promise-breaking politician. And in a multicandidate field, there's no guarantee that Huntsman will end up reaping the benefits of tearing down a rival because there are many other candidates ' and more conservative ones ' for voters to rally behind.
