Suicide bomber strikes at base in east Afghanistan, kills 2 Afghan security guards
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ' A suicide bomber has detonated a small truck laden with explosives at the entrance to a military-civilian compound in eastern Afghanistan, killing two Afghan security guards.
Afghan police and the U.S.-led coalition say the bomber attacked a provincial reconstruction team base on Thursday morning in Gardez, the capital of Gardez province.
There are more than 20 so-called PRTs across Afghanistan as international workers train Afghan government officials and help in development at the local level.
Afghan border police commander for the country's southeast, Abdul Ihay Atrafi, says the truck bomber sped through an outer gate, then blew up the truck when he came under fire at a second gate.
NATO says two Afghan guards were killed.
