Officials now say Sunday night for reopen of fire-damaged Los Angeles-area freeway
LOS ANGELES (AP) ' Officials say a fire-damaged Southern California freeway is closed for at least another day.
Caltrans said in a statement that Los Angeles-area drivers would be faced with a fourth day of frustration as crews would need until Sunday night to finish repairs on the Pomona Freeway.
Officials had hoped to have the 10-mile freeway section open by Saturday.
Crews thought they could quickly tear down part of a bridge in suburban Montebello that was weakened when a fuel tanker caught fire beneath it on Wednesday.
But they found telephone lines nestled in asbestos under the bridge, and the danger of releasing the cancer-causing asbestos into the air or cutting off telephone communications for thousands of people means the bridge section must be carefully dismantled, instead of just knocked down.
