Suspect in NJ tourist killings unfocused in court
Aunt: Woman arrested in killing of 2 Canadian tourists in Atlantic City, NJ, is mentally ill
By The Associated Press

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ' A woman arrested in the daytime stabbing deaths of two Canadian tourists in Atlantic City has appeared in court, where she laughed, frowned, grimaced and repeatedly asked where her lawyer was.

Her aunt says Antoinette Pelzer has long suffered from mental illness. Authorities say Pelzer stabbed two Canadian women, ages 80 and 47, on Monday morning as they were walking in an area where most of Atlantic City's casinos have their entranceways and parking garages.

Witnesses tell police that Pelzer tried to steal a purse from one of the women and stabbed them.

Superior Court Judge Michael Donio had difficulty getting the defendant to focus and respond to his questions.

The judge has set her bail on murder and weapons charges at $1.5 million.
