Suspicious package sent to Alaska senator, US rep.
Senator, congressman receive suspicious packages at Alaska offices; buildings evacuated
By The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ' A spokeswoman for U.S. Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska says a box containing a white powder was delivered to the senator's Fairbanks office and opened by a staff member.

Begich spokeswoman Julie Hasquet says the staff member, following office procedure, opened the package in a plastic bag and white powder spilled out on Monday. Hasquet says the package was turned over to U.S. marshals, who were located in a nearby office in the Fairbanks federal building.

The staff member suffered no apparent injuries but was scheduled to be examined. The package had an Arizona return address.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the office of U.S. Rep. Don Young also received a suspicious package at his Anchorage office in Peterson Towers. The federal building in Fairbanks and Peterson Towers were evacuated.
