DNA evidence frees Texas man wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 25 years for wife's '86 slaying
GEORGETOWN, Texas (AP) ' A Texas grocery store employee who spent nearly 25 years in prison for his wife's slaying is free after DNA tests showed another man was responsible.
Fifty-seven-year-old Michael Morton appeared in court in Georgetown, north of Austin, on Tuesday, and then was released. Prosecutors had agreed he should be freed.
Morton was convicted on circumstantial evidence in the beating death of his wife, Christine, 1986.
Morton always said that he was innocent, that he left for work at 5:30 a.m. that day and an intruder was responsible.
Tests that weren't available during his original trial determined a bloody bandanna found near their home contained DNA from the victim and a man linked to a similar 1987 slaying in the area.
Authorities haven't identified that man.
