Abilene Christian University bus overturns, killing student, injuring 15
BALLINGER, Texas (AP) ' A bus carrying Abilene Christian University students and faculty to a children's home for a weekend of missionary work lost control Friday and overturned, killing a 19-year-old student and sending all 15 other people onboard to hospitals, officials said.
Abilene Christian said in a statement on its emergency website that the bus was carrying 12 agricultural students, three faculty members and a faculty member's spouse us when it crashed Friday afternoon on U.S. 83 near Ballinger, a town about 200 miles southwest of Fort Worth. The school said the bus was carrying 16 occupants, but it didn't say who was driving.
The bus was traveling south when the driver lost control as he approached a slight curve, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The bus struck a concrete culvert and flipped, turning over completely one time and ejecting several passengers.
The student was confirmed dead at the scene and all 15 other people were taken to area hospitals, the DPS said.
"We're trying to determine exactly what we have," Abilene Christian Police Chief Jimmy Ellison told KDFW-TV in Dallas. "There were several critical injuries."
Those onboard were headed to Medina for the weekend to do mission work at a children's home, the DPS said.
Dr. Phil Schubert, president of the 4,700-student school in central Texas, was headed Friday evening with staff to the hospitals where passengers were transported, the school said.
