Thousands rally demanding electoral reforms in Malaysia ahead of national polls expected soon
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ' More than 10,000 demonstrators have swamped Malaysia's largest city to demand an overhaul in electoral policies perceived as biased. The rally comes ahead of national polls expected soon.
Saturday's demonstration reflects concerns that Prime Minister Najib Razak's ruling coalition will have an unfair upper hand in elections that could be called as early as June.
Activists have alleged the Election Commission is biased and claimed that voter registration lists are tainted with fraudulent voters.
Demonstrators poured into downtown Kuala Lumpur on , attempting to walk to a public square that police sealed off with barbed wire and barricades.
Authorities say an opposition-backed pressure group that organized the rally has no right to use the square.
