Amputations and genital injuries increase sharply in Afghan war as do multiple amputations
WASHINGTON (AP) ' A new report says there's been a dramatic increase in the number of severe injuries among troops in Afghanistan ' including those who have had multiple limbs amputated.
The report by medical experts at the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs says the catastrophic wounds are partly due to the counterinsurgency tactic that has American soldiers walking on foot patrols among the Afghan people ' rather than riding in armored vehicles.
Tuesday's report says genital injuries also have risen significantly.
The number of U.S. troops who had amputations jumped from 86 in 2009, to 187 in 2010, and 147 so far this year. All but about a dozen of those were in Afghanistan and the rest Iraq.
