Tug corrals loose fuel barge off Alaska's coast
Tug corrals loose barge with 140,000 gallons of aviation fuel off Alaska's west coast
By The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ' The Coast Guard says a tugboat has managed to reattach a tow line to a loose barge carrying tens of thousands of gallons of fuel off Alaska's west coast.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lally says the 82-foot tug Sinuk was able to hook up to the barge when winds dropped to 27 mph Wednesday afternoon. The tug is towing the 173-foot barge toward its original destination near Nome.

Lally says there's no reported damage to the barge.

The tug had shadowed the barge overnight after it got loose Tuesday evening in 15-foot waves and winds that reached 46 mph.

The Crowley Marine-operated vessel is carrying 140,000 gallons of aviation fuel and 5,800 gallons of gasoline. The Coast Guard sent a C-130 airplane to assess the situation earlier Wednesday and is keeping in close communication with the tug.
