UAE detains 6 activists previously stripped of citizenship for criticizing rulers
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ' An attorney for six activists in the United Arab Emirates previously stripped of their citizenship for criticizing the country's rulers says they were detained for illegally residing in the oil-rich union.
Lawyer Mohammed al-Roken says the six were held on Monday after they were summoned to the Interior Ministry in the capital, Abu Dhabi. He says they were told they are now in the country illegally and were asked to sign a statement obligating them to find a new nationality within two weeks.
After refusing to sign the statement, they were taken to a detention facility where illegal immigrants are held.
Authorities revoked the nationality of the six last year as part of an ongoing crackdown on political dissent in the Gulf union of seven city states.
