UC board OKs additional 9.6 percent tuition hike
University of Calif board approves additional 9.6 pct tuition hike to offset state budget cut
By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' The University of California is raising student tuition by an additional 9.6 percent this fall in response to a steep reduction in state support.

The UC Board of Regents on Thursday approved the $1,068 increase in tuition, which comes on top of a previously approved 8 percent hike for 2011-2012.

The full board vote follows the finance committee's approval earlier Thursday.

Undergraduate tuition for California residents will rise to $12,192, which doesn't include room, board and roughly $1,000 in campus fees. That's nearly $2,000 more than what UC undergraduates paid this past school year.

One third of the $150 million in new revenue will be used for financial aid.

UC officials say the additional tuition increase is needed because the 10-campus system is losing $650 million in state support.
