UK police: All passengers in bus incident safe
British police: All passengers safe after incident on M6 Motorway; no terror link found
By The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) Armed officers closed a section of a major highway in central England on Thursday after a report of suspicious activity aboard a bus, but police later said the scene was safe and no suspects were in custody.

Police also said the incident was not related to terrorism.

Staffordshire Police said that the force had received the report from a "genuinely concerned" member of the public and treated the information as "extremely serious" until the investigation was carried out.

"There is no danger to passengers at the scene or any other travelers who were on the motorway at that time," police said in a statement. "We are also not treating anyone as a suspect."

The multiagency response involved a bomb disposal unit, more than 10 fire trucks and dozens of police and emergency vehicles at the Weeford toll plaza of the M6 highway in the West Midlands, 116 miles (187 kilometers) north of London, where the Olympic Games will be held later this month.

Britain's Ministry of Defense also provided support to the police including an army bomb disposal team as part of routine procedures.

The bus en route to London was pulled over to the shoulder of the road, and aerial footage showed what appeared to be passengers sitting on the ground in a marked-off square, spaced apart from each other. Police said the passengers, who were evacuated from the bus by armed officers, have been put on another bus.
