United Nations: Indian peacekeeper killed in volatile eastern Congo
KINSHASA, Congo (AP) ¯¯¯ A United Nations spokesman says an Indian peacekeeper was killed in volatile eastern Congo, an area that has been unsettled by a nascent rebellion.
Reached by telephone, spokesman Madnodje Mounoubai said the peacekeeper was hit by an exploding shell overnight Thursday during an attack on the village of Bunagana by M23 rebels.
The new rebellion is made up of soldiers who deserted the regular army in April. M23 spokesman Vianney Kazarama said their fighters seized the town at around 6 a.m. local time on Friday. A resident of Bunagana confirmed that M23 had taken the locality overnight, but he asked not to be named out of fear for his safety.
The rebels have been making steady gains in recent days, an alarming development for a nation recovering from war.
