US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald discusses decision to leave Chicago post after decade on job
CHICAGO (AP) ' U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald says he's 100 percent confident that leaving his post in Chicago is the right decision.
Fitzgerald joked Thursday he's been "squatting" for seven years since his initial 4-year term ended. He announced Wednesday he will leave the job at the end of June and take the summer off.
He says this is the right time for him to leave and notes the burden of a prosecutor's job on family life. He says he doesn't know what he's doing next but that "public service is in (his) blood."
Fitzgerald's reputation as a relentless, nonpolitical prosecutor leaves his future wide open ' whether it's working for a private law firm or Fortune 500 company, or accepting a top political post.
