US, Denmark tied 1-1 at Hopman Cup after wins by Mardy Fish, Caroline Wozniacki

PERTH, Australia (AP) ' The United States and Denmark are tied 1-1 at the Hopman Cup on Monday after victories by Mardy Fish and Caroline Wozniacki.

The top-ranked Wozniacki evened the series by beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-6 (4), 6-2. Wozniacki trailed 3-0 and 5-1 in the first set. She arrived in Western Australia earlier in the day from Thailand and was given extra practice time on the hard courts.

After officials changed the order of singles matches, Fish opened by defeating Frederik Neilsen 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Mixed doubles will decide the best-of-three series.

In another Group A series in this Australian Open tuneup, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych won singles matches to send Czech Republic past Bulgaria 2-1.

PERTH, Australia (AP) ' Mardy Fish has given the United States a 1-0 lead in its Hopman Cup match against Denmark after rallying to beat Frederik Neilsen 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Fish broke Neilsen when the Dane was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set to force the tiebreaker.

Fish was originally scheduled to play the second match of the series, but organizers switched the order of the men's and women's singles matches because top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki only arrived in Perth earlier Monday.

Wozniacki was set to play American Bethanie Mattek-Sands later, with a mixed-doubles match to follow the women's singles.

Earlier, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych won singles matches to give Czech Republic a 2-1 win over Bulgaria.
