US citizen among dead in Afghan shrine attack
US government says American citizen among the 56 killed in Afghan shrine attack
By The Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ' The U.S. government says an American citizen was among the 56 people killed in a bomb attack on a shrine in the Afghan capital.

The U.S. Embassy says in a statement issued Wednesday that they have been in touch with the family of the deceased and expressed their condolences. Embassy spokeswoman Megan Ellis says the American victim of the Tuesday bombing was not a U.S. government employee. She declined to give any further details.

It is the only death so far announced of a foreign citizen from the unprecedented sectarian attack on a group of worshippers marking a Shiite holiday.
